"Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless labor; and of looking at plants and animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single product system."
—Bill Mollison

In order to promote and inspire sustainable living within their region of China, a couple decided to buy a piece of land upon which they would build a farm that utilized the principles of permaculture. The farm would display closed-loop agricultural practices that related to living needs and waste. An education center would be built on the site that functioned as a classroom, a restaurant, where food grown on the land would be served and a guesthouse.

The building design is entirely autonomous, using passive solar heating, natural ventilation and on-site energy production. Rainwater is collected, grey-water is recycled, and organic/human waste is composted to return the nutrients to the surrounding soil. The structure is locally-sourced timber frame, with site-sourced straw-clay infill walls. Innovative sustainable design systems make the home comfortable and easy to maintain.
